Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran is pleased to present Look Out, Kim Dorland’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. Known for his extreme painting, vibrant colours, interpretation of Canadian landscape and reflections on his personal life, Dorland’s work is a collection of contradictions and contrasts. In pursuit of pushing the limits of his own practice, Dorland is an experimenter at heart who looks for new ways to rethink the language of painting.

For Dorland, this exhibition is an assortment of moments, almost as if each painting is a short story or a flash from the past. Understood as an almost instinctual defense against the images and feelings of dread that inevitably seep into consciousness, Dorland offers the user a new body of work depicting moments from a temporary comfort. His attention is turned towards the intimate household details in his midst, a certain consequence of the new socio-political climate. With details and elements drawn from the lexicon of everyday life, these paintings refer to quiet moments, replete with minutiae of blankets, furniture and intimate scenes and subjects. It offers relief, however fleeting, from the anxiety lurking always at the edges.

For several years—in addition to his use of traditional painting mediums and techniques—he has experimented with programs on his iPad to make “digital paintings.” To create this latest body of work gathered in this exhibition, Dorland brings the digital process directly into the canvas, printing rather than painting the “underpainting” and then combining them with more traditional methods and materials, including the colour and density that have always been a singular mark of his practice. The result is a hybridization of the painting process, which disrupts the viewers’ expectation of the painted surface creating a tension that feels very timely.

Kim Dorland was born in 1974 in Wainwright (Canada). Dorland has exhibited internationally, including shows in Milan, Montreal, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Solo exhibitions have been presented in prestigious institutions, such as the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (Canada), the Contemporary Calgary (Canada) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (USA). His work has been featured at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Canada); Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art (Canada); Vancouver Art Gallery (Canada); Sander Collection (Germany); Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (USA); Blanton Museum of Art (USA); The Glenbow Museum in Calgary (Canada); Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (USA), and can be found in many private and corporate collections.
