For its first participation at ALAC, Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran is proud to present recent works by established female Canadian artists Julia Dault, Jessica Eaton and Jeanie Riddle. Through various experiments with photography and painting, these three artists revisit traditional mediums and reflect on personal modes of artistic processes.

By devising expressive gestures through rules and reasoning indicative of Post-Minimal and Conceptual art, Julia Dault is part of a generation of artists invigorating abstract painting today. She explores notions of artistic labour, often through constraining, repeating, or mechanically producing her hand’s gestures. This is achieved in part through her use of non-traditional tools and supports: Dault scrapes and pushes paint across the canvas with combs, squeegees, and other implements that help her create pattern-like, but ultimately imperfect, compositions. The new works showcased at ALAC are the most recent examples of her polyvalent craftsmanship, resulting in both graphic compositions and colourful abstractions. Dault first gained widespread notice with her inclusion in the 2012 New Museum Triennial in New York. Since then, she has exhibited at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery Toronto, London’s White Cube, the Perez Art Museum Miami, the Saatchi Gallery London, and the 3:e Vâningen Göteborg Sweden.

Using a large format film camera, Jessica Eaton’s work considers the very nature of photography. Eaton came to international acclaim through her cfaal series, presented here at the fair. Like the majority of Eaton’s works, these optically charged images are made by taking multiple in-camera exposures of common studio supplies. Through her abundant use of traditional analog photography practices – such as colour – separation filtering and in-camera masking – Eaton imbues her images with an aesthetic more reminiscent of the paintings and drawings of hard-edge geometric abstraction than the photographs of traditional studio work. Solo exhibitions include Wild Permutations at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland (USA); Flash: Jessica Eaton at the California Museum of Photography (USA); and Ad Infinitum at The Photographers’ Gallery in London (UK). Eaton was nominated in 2016 for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Her work can be found in the public collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, among others.

Jeanie Riddle experiments with the conventions of painting, taking both the usual form of the canvas and sculptural installations. Through her practice, the artist reflects on the simple refinement of material, line, contour and colour. Her sculptural works play with their surrounding emptiness to create new architectural spaces. The new work showcased hold hidden messages that pervade the loose forms and vivid colours. The artist has exhibited widely across Canada as well as in NYC and Berlin. She is the recipient of numerous Canada Council grants including an international residency in Paris. Her work can be found in the collections of TD Bank, The Bank of Montreal, RBD, Giverny Capital, The Canadian Art Foundation, Duncan Ross, The Aldo Group, The Claridge Collection, The Tedeschi Collection, The City of Montreal as well as privately in Canada, USA and UK.

In presenting these three artists in dialogue for the first time at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran brings into the spotlight a discussion on artistic process and experimentation. The works colorfully blur the boundaries of different mediums and of visual representation.
